This is a quick overview of how to open a PayPal account

Tip: It takes 3-5 days to create a PayPal Account. Do it well in advance of any buying or selling you intend to do.

Step1: Create Your PayPal Account

To begin this two step process - go to https://www.PayPal.co.uk and click Sign Up. When you sign up for a PayPal account you will be asked for your contact details including name, address, telephone number and email.

You will also be asked to agree to the user agreement. If you intend to sell items on eBay it is advisable to create a Premier Account. A Premier account will allow you to start receiving credit and debit card payments for your eBay sales for a small fee. If you only intend to use your PayPal account to pay for items, you can always upgrade your account at a later stage.

Step 2: Verification

Once the account is created you need to establish a way to transfer funds to your account. It is recommended that you do this prior to buying or selling on eBay as it can take 3-5 days to complete the process. This is because PayPal need to verify the bank account or credit card you intend to use to fund your account.

Log on to your account as set up in Step 1 and select 'Get Verified'.

Phone Verification - To check that the address and home telephone number you registered with your debit or credit card are correct, PayPal makes an automated phone call to the number entered for your address. You may choose to receive the automated call immediately or in one minute by selecting the appropriate button. PayPal will issue you with a 4 digit PIN number to enter when you receive the automated phone call. When you answer the call, you are instructed to enter the PIN. After you have entered this PIN in the phone keypad, just hang up.

Should this telephone process fail, the next time you log in to your PayPal account you be will prompted to complete an Expanded Use programme using one of the methods described below.

Credit Card Verification - Enter your credit card details. Within 3-5 days a small charge of $1.95 will be made on your account. This transaction will appear on your card statement with a randomly-generated four-digit number known as the 'Expanded Use Number'. Once you have the number you can log into your PayPal account and click the 'Complete Expanded Use Enrolment' link on the 'Account Overview' page to complete your enrolment. The $1.95 is reimbursed when you make your first payment with PayPal.

Bank Account Verification - Enter your bank details. Within 3-5 days two small deposits of a couple of pence will appear on your bank statement. Log in to your PayPal account and enter the value of the two amounts to complete verification.
